DHEADHEA is the most common steroid present in our bodies, after cholesterol. DHEA is an abbreviation for dehydroepiandrosterone, which is pronounced dee-HI-dro-EPP-ee-an-DROS-ter-own. Produced by our adrenal glands and gonads (testes/ovaries), it is a precursor for the body's manufacture of many other significant hormones. Levels of estrogens or androgens for which DHEA is precursor also drop with aging, consistent with DHEA having been found to be a significant source of these hormones. Supplementation with DHEA can restore DHEA to peak adult levels. MOTHER OF HORMONESDHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is synthesized in the body primarily in the adrenal cortex and the gonads. After cholesterol, it is the steroid found in highest levels in the blood, mainly as the readily-produced sulfate derivative (DHEAS). DHEA is called the mother of hormones by researchers because it is used by the body, either directly as a precursor steroid, through hormone-influenced feedback mechanisms, or through further metabolism of first-pass metabolites, to manufacture many critical intermediates and hormones, including sex hormones that are necessary for many bodily functions. Some of these hormones are well known, such as estrogen (estrone, estriol, estradiol) and androgen (testosterone). The importance of DHEA/DHEAS is highlighted by findings that approximately 50% of total androgens in adult men are derived from DHEA/DHEAS. And in women, the formation of estrogens in peripheral tissues from DHEA/DHEAS is approximately 75% before menopause, and close to 100% after menopause. DHEA LEVELS DECREASE AS WE AGEInvestigators interested in the biology of aging have increasingly focused their attention on DHEA and its sulfated form, DHEAS. Blood levels of DHEA/DHEAS are high at birth, decline markedly, then rise early in puberty, and usually peak at around age 20 to 30. Levels then progressively decline. Levels at age 70, for example, may be in the vicinity of 20% of the peak values attained in ages 20 to 30; levels at ages 85 to 90, may be in the vicinity of 5% of earlier peak values. In this same time frame, correspondingly dramatic reductions in circulating androgens/estrogens occur. EXCITING ANIMAL RESULTS WITH DHEANumerous experimental studies in animals have demonstrated wide-ranging beneficial effects of DHEA supplementation. Beneficial effects in these studies have been observed in such areas as weight control, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, enhancement of the immune system, and even in prolongation of life span. Further studies are necessary to determine the extent to which the results of animal studies can be projected to humans. HUMAN STUDY INTERESTThese exciting animal study results have led investigators to speculate that some of the degenerative changes associated with human aging may be related to the well-known progressive decline in circulating DHEA/DHEAS. The relevance of these studies to humans remains an open scientific question, and the subject of great interest and on-going investigation. DHEA, in fact, has become one of the most extensively studied substances in medical history. Areas of new investigations, new results, and new ideas and speculations regarding potential applications come out on a continuing, even daily basis in the medical and scientific press, in broadcast news programs, in summaries in the popular health and consumer oriented press, and even on the Internet. Prudence dictates that we should maintain a conservative attitude until fully reviewed scientific studies confirming new applications become available. DHEA SUPPLEMENTATION IN HUMANSDHEA supplementation in quality double-blindplacebo-controlled cross-over human studies in male and females aged 40 to 70 show that DHEA supplementation can restore circulating DHEA/DHEAS levels to those found in young adults. Levels in these studies included either 50 mg or 100 mg daily supplementation. These results appear consistent with animal study expectations. Owing to possible individual variability, it has been recommended that persons consider having their DHEA/DHEAS levels checked prior to and during the use of DHEA supplements to determine if supplementation is appropriate and to assure that the optimum level is being reached, and to avoid ingestion of excessive amounts.
